NYSEF Nordic Team competes in Eastern Cup Opener Race Weekend

Craftsbury, VT – The New York Ski Education (NYSEF) Nordic Team traveled to Craftsbury, Vermont for the opening weekend of the New England Nordic Ski Association’s Eastern Cup and Junior National Qualifier Race Series. The event took place over two days and featured a classic sprint race on Saturday and distance skate races on Sunday. Over 500 skiers from New England and New York participated in these races, ranging from citizen to elite racers.

On Saturday skiers raced one lap around a 1.4 kilometer loop, made of entirely manmade snow for the sprint event. NYSEF’s team was led by Maile Sapp (Morrisonville, NY), who finished 49th overall and 10th in the J1 age group (ages 16-17). Nina Armstrong (Lake Placid, NY) also had a solid performance finishing 13th in the J2 age group (ages 14-15). Gabriella Armstrong (Lake Placid, NY) and Amelia McDonnell (Paul Smiths, NY) raced into 26th and 35th positions respectively in the J2 class. On the boy’s side, Karl Schultz (Lake Placid, NY) finished 16th in the J2 age category with teammate Everett Sapp (Morrisonville, NY) close behind in 20th place.

Sunday’s racing featured a 5.1 kilometer skate technique for the J2 Girls and Boys and an 8.75 kilometer race for the Woman’s event. Karl Shultz improved upon from the previous day and finished with a notable 9th place finish. The girl’s J2 field was again led by Nina Armstrong, who continued to impress as she finished 7th. Gabriella Armstrong and Amelia McDonnell also had strong races, finishing 13th and 27th. Maile Sapp earned herself a 15th place finish in the J1 girls’ class in the highly competitive Women’s race.

FIS World Cup #3: Québec City!

Early Saturday morning our Comp and Prep/Devo NC Teams loaded up in the van in route to watch the second day of racing at the Québec City World Cup. Saturday’s race featured a 1.6 kilometer sprint race that took place on the streets at Parliament Hill. Thousands of spectators gathered around the winding 850 meter loop to cheer on their favorite athletes - whether it was the local favorite Alex Harvey or last year’s overall sprint champion Kikkan Randall.

Racers skied over bridges, through narrow turns and even over a small jump, which made it exciting to watch. The weekend was a historic weekend for the U.S. Ski Team after Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins teamed up and won the team sprint on Friday and Kikkan won the individual sprint on Saturday! Other highlights included a 5th place finish for Andrew Newell and Sophie Caldwell’s 14th place finish in the individual sprint.

After some exploring of downtown Québec City, we got back in the van and made our way back home. Everyone agreed that it was a worthwhile trip and it was inspiring to see the world’s best competing against each other. This experience will be a great motivator to carry us through the last week of training before racing this weekend at the Craftsbury Eastern Cup.

- Coach Matt
