Craftsbury,
VT – The New York Ski Education (NYSEF) Nordic Team traveled to Craftsbury,
Vermont for the opening weekend of the New England Nordic Ski Association’s
Eastern Cup and Junior National Qualifier Race Series. The event took place
over two days and featured a classic sprint race on Saturday and distance skate
races on Sunday. Over 500 skiers from New England and New York participated in
these races, ranging from citizen to elite racers.
On Saturday
skiers raced one lap around a 1.4 kilometer loop, made of entirely manmade snow
for the sprint event. NYSEF’s team was led by Maile Sapp (Morrisonville, NY),
who finished 49th overall and 10th in the J1 age group (ages 16-17). Nina
Armstrong (Lake Placid, NY) also had a solid performance finishing 13th in the
J2 age group (ages 14-15). Gabriella Armstrong (Lake Placid, NY) and Amelia
McDonnell (Paul Smiths, NY) raced into 26th and 35th positions respectively in
the J2 class. On the boy’s side, Karl Schultz (Lake Placid, NY) finished 16th in
the J2 age category with teammate Everett Sapp (Morrisonville, NY) close behind
in 20th place.
Sunday’s
racing featured a 5.1 kilometer skate technique for the J2 Girls and Boys and an
8.75 kilometer race for the Woman’s event. Karl Shultz improved upon from the
previous day and finished with a notable 9th place finish. The girl’s J2 field
was again led by Nina Armstrong, who continued to impress as she finished 7th.
Gabriella Armstrong and Amelia McDonnell also had strong races, finishing 13th and
27th. Maile Sapp earned herself a 15th place finish in the J1 girls’ class in
the highly competitive Women’s race.
